In a time of rapidly changing and ever-advancing technology, the opportunities to get an education via the Internet have grown exponentially. Now it is possible to get an education at almost every level via online schooling options. From elementary school all the way up to the PhD level, there are education options to suit almost everyone.

One of the biggest advantages to online schooling is the relatively low cost. Why go to a community college?

With higher education becoming more expensive and admission requirements tightening, many high school seniors are considering community (or junior) colleges as their first choice for pursuing a degree. Community college students constitute 43 percent of all undergraduate students in the United States.

In Fall 2007, 11.8 million adults were enrolled at more than 1,100 community colleges across the nation. The majority (6.8 million) take classes for credit toward a degree; 5 million take non-credit classes for skill building, personal interests or career development. Forty-two percent of community college students are the first members of their families to attend college.

Each community college develops its own mission based on the community it serves; but in general, most exist to provide open access to postsecondary education, prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions, provide workforce development and skills training and offer non-credit programs ranging from English as a second language to skills retraining to community enrichment programs or cultural activities.

It costs far less to attend a community college per year than a public four-year college. In 2007, the average annual tuition and fees for a community college was $2,544; average tuition and fees at a four-year college was $7,020. Still, nearly half of all students attending community colleges receive some form of federal financial aid.

Community colleges offer a vast variety of degree and certification programs in addition to countless non-credit courses. Many offer an associate’s degree in a number of fields, requiring about two years of study. Some have partnered with their state university systems to offer transfer degrees, where students complete two years of general education requirements and enter their four-year school with junior status, ready to concentrate on courses in their major department.

What Kind of School Should You Attend?

You’re thinking about college and trying to decide whether you should go to a university or a technical school. This is a good question and one that no one besides you can answer. However, there are differences between them and they are major.

Universities provide a general, broad based education. They are designed to make you think in many different areas, besides your primary interest. You will probably have classes in psychology, geography, physics, math, history, art and others. You will spend almost two years of your education outside your major.

The major will then be heavy in the logic of how your subject works. If you will be majoring in computers you will have memory logic classes and database processes classes which teach you how computers think and process.

Meanwhile, technical schools give a specific hands-on approach to learning. You will have some classes in math, English, etc. but they will not tend to be as broad based nor as in-depth as the University classes. What you will get is much more hands on on how they work. Looking at computer majors in a technical school you would find them learning how specific operating systems work like Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 or even delving into how Linux works.

Be aware that transferring from a university to a technical school or from a technical school to a university can be frustrating because very few credits will transfer in either direction. They just do not teach even close to the same material and therefore will not accept much of the others classes. This is normal and expected.

If you are a person who loves to understand the underpinnings of how things work or really enjoy learning all sorts of different things then a university might be the right choice for you. However, if you go to sleep in lectures and crave hands on, then a technical school might be just the ticket.

Benefits and Drawbacks of a Specialized School

One option that many people don’t immediately consider when deciding where to go for college or higher education, is a specialty school. There are schools devoted to learning many different skills or trades that may be good choices for many people. There are benefits as well as drawbacks to these types of schools, many of which will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

The main benefit to a specialty school is that the training and classes will be tailored to what you need in the workforce. Many of these programs award certificates or diplomas instead of degrees which do not require as many of the core classes that would be required when getting a degree. If you are just wanting to advance in your career you may not need to take advanced math classes, chemistry, history or literature. Another related benefit is that you can normally obtain a certificate or diploma in much less time than it would take you to go to a full university. This is an excellent option for those with already established careers who are hoping to advance, as they will not have to take time away from their careers to attend school and may even be able to do much of their class work online at home.

However, there are certain drawbacks to specialized schools. A diploma or certificate may not have the same positive impact on your resume as a traditional degree would. Also, most specialized schools are not publicly funded, which makes them more expensive to attend and often times harder to get scholarships and grants. The best specialized schools will have financial aid counselors who can help you work through the paperwork and perhaps apply for what grants or loans are available. The drawbacks are often worth it in the end when you finally achieve your educational goals.

Choosing Between Traditional and Online Schools

One decision many people have when deciding to go back to school is whether they should attend a traditional school or an online school. While this is a very personal decision there are three things that potential students have to consider when going through this process. They are: quality of education, what environment is most conducive to their learning, and what type of school will fit into their lifestyle best.

Many online schools offer teachers and educational programs that are comparable to those of traditional colleges. The degrees obtained are just as good as one received at a college that requires attendance in the classroom. However, there are many schools that are simply diploma mills, so make sure and do extensive research before signing up for one of these colleges to make sure you are not wasting your time and money on an education that will not help you to obtain employment once you are finished. Another consideration is whether the program you are interested in translates well to online education. Classes that require hands on learning may not be the right choice for an online education.

Some people have trouble sitting still for a full length class and an online education would be a great choice for them. Others however may not have the self-motivation that taking classes online requires. Often, classes never meet face to face and you may have to pace yourself to get work done when it is required and seek outside help if you have trouble understanding.

Finally, anyone thinking about going back to school needs to determine what type of education will fit in with their lifestyle best. Someone who has young children may prefer to go to a traditional school part time so they can have a quieter learning environment. Those who are in the workforce may need online classes to fit school in around their jobs.

What is Expected of an Online Student?

Many people wonder what it is like to take online classes. Those who are considering going back to school often think that it will be much easier to go to an online school than to attend a traditional school. There are benefits and drawbacks to both types of schools but anyone who is thinking about an online school would do well to learn as much about what they will be required to do before they invest time and money in enrolling in classes.

Online classes will often take as much or more of a student’s time than traditional classes. It will require a student to put in time to learn material partially on their own. There are at times online lectures available but it is not the same as a classroom lecture where the class interacts with the instructor and the instructor moves at the pace of the students.

A student taking classes online will be required to master all coursework on their own and find outside tutoring if they are having trouble keeping up. Many students think that all online classes will be easy because they will have access to books and notes when testing, this is often counteracted by the teacher doing more testing that is time limited or in essay format. This will help the teacher understand how the student actually comprehends the lessons and not how good they are at finding the answers in a book.

A final consideration is whether you as a student have the self-motivation to log on and do the work without having a teacher putting regular deadlines on homework assignments. Teachers of online classes will often allow the work to be turned in all at the end of the quarter, but this is not always going to be for the best interest of the student to wait to complete the work all at once.

Attending a technical school or community college can be a great experience for anyone looking to increase their career options or simply broaden their education. Once the student is registered they may not know what to expect once classes begin. This can be especially scary for adults who have been in the workforce for many years and haven’t attended school since technology began taking such an important role in the classroom.

Walking into class your first day can be daunting. One way to help ease the transition is learning everything you can about your classes before day one. The class syllabus and book requirements are often right there, so you will know if you need a certain textbook or materials for the class.

Many classes now have computers available for student use. Depending on your class you may use these extensively during class time or only for certain projects. Learning how to log on to the computer before your first day will help you to feel more at ease when class work begins. If your teacher does not want you to use the computers for class work, you should refrain from using them during class time for personal use. Also, you should not use your cell phone, PDA or other device during class time. Most teachers would prefer you did not text message or browse the internet while they are teaching. Not only is this rude to the teacher, it will make it much harder for you to concentrate on the lecture and participate in the class.

First, you need to research any school you intend to enroll in. Most of these schools are for-profit businesses, and while they may offer top-notch education, their main interest is in making money. Research online and talk to former students to decide if the school is going to offer you the education you are hoping to receive. If you find that many former students are having trouble finding jobs in their chosen fields you may want to keep looking for the right school for you.

You also need to fully understand what you will get for the time you spend attending classes. Will you receive a certificate of credit, a diploma or an associate’s degree? The difference between these can be significant, especially in the medical field. Generally, the shorter and easier the classes seem like they are going to be the less your awarded credits will mean in the workforce. This may not matter in some cases, so your best bet is to research what kind of education is needed for the job you one day hope to get.
