While choosing a career field you’ll enjoy is important, so too is selecting one that pays well. Between student loan payments and everyday expenses, life can be expensive. To help you choose the best job for your skills and expected pay range, here are four of the current top earning careers.

Chief Executive Officer

Many years of dedication to the business environment may be needed to earn the title of Chief Executive Officer. Once you’ve arrived, the perks are impressive. CEOs oversee organizational operations to make sure things run smoothly each day. If you’re great at people management and have an eye for business, this could be the career field for you.

Engineering Manager

To become an engineering manager, you’ll need a diversified business background, including experience in financial management and human resources. This career offers a respectable salary, but also requires the management of teams within an organization.

Orthodontists

Orthodontists typically must train for at least nine years before entering the job market. These high paying jobs are for those who love to fix people’s smiles and have a knack for helping others feel comfortable in the dentist’s chair.

Surgeons

A surgeon is another career that takes many years of training. The result, however, is an average salary that makes the hard work worthwhile. If you hope to become a surgeon, expect a rewarding career that will test your skills daily and offer immense rewards. How many other professionals can say they save lives?

Work is about finding a balance between doing what you love and being paid well for it. By choosing a top earning career, you can advance your skills in a meaningful field while earning a respectable salary.

In a time of rapidly changing and ever-advancing technology, the opportunities to get an education via the Internet have grown exponentially. Now it is possible to get an education at almost every level via online schooling options. From elementary school all the way up to the PhD level, there are education options to suit almost everyone.

One of the biggest advantages to online schooling is the relatively low cost. Money for education is a major factor in times of economic turmoil, and because of that, many people may be hesitant about school, especially those who are considering going back to school to earn or finish a degree. Luckily, there are many options for low cost online schools.

Another advantage of online education is the flexibility it provides. Unlike a regular school day of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or a schedule of classes, online schooling offers the opportunity to do the work during a time that is best for you. There may be deadlines for assignment submissions, but everything else is essentially done at your pace.

Choosing an online school can be difficult. There are many to choose from. When you begin looking for a school, make sure your goals are clear. Know what you’re planning to study beforehand. This can help you find the school that offers the best programs. Choose a school that offers the kind of help you know you’ll need. Some even offer more tuition assistance than others, so keep that in mind as well. Seeking advice isn’t a bad idea, but ultimately, only you know what will work best.

Image via Wikipedia

It is not unheard of for people to go through four to six years of schooling, then wind up working in a field that has nothing to do with their degree. Sometimes this happens because of poor counseling beforehand, others pick up a major because they think that it’s the next “big” field, and others simply change their minds. It should go without saying that college is a major expense and should be planned for accordingly.

Scenarios like the ones mentioned are entirely avoidable. It takes is a good long introspective look on the behalf of the student, and conversations with people working in a chosen field to discover if the choice of schooling is the right one. Spending time researching, asking questions, and doing some thinking helps with the final decision. Some may need a year off before starting higher education, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

For the forseeable future, graduates are going to have a harder time finding jobs out of college. Baby boomers are working into their retirement years, companies are hiring less and getting more productivity out of existing employees, and there are fewer jobs available in general. These facts make focusing education on a chosen path much more important than ever before.

Having a focused education shows a future employer that you are dedicated to the career path and that you intend to stick around for a while. You will benefit by being a better fit in the field, as well as being prepared for what is to come.

Preparing for college is not always a simple task, especially when you consider everything that needs to be bought or paid for before you can attend your courses. Make sure you consider everything and work on a budget before embarking on your college journey.

Preparing for College

Before you enroll in college, you need to consider all of the costs that are involved. This extends past tuition costs, lodging costs and books, and extends into things like clothing costs, school supplies, and other incidentals that may come up while you are in school. Buying the right clothes can be a little costly, and so you want to make sure you have a budget for everything that matters, whether you are buying Apple Bottom Clothes or another popular brand that you’re serious about.

There are a lot of different cost considerations when it comes to going to college, and some are large while others are small. Transportation costs, residence costs and tuition for example can be costly expenses, while costs for books, clothing, food and similar things can be less. Either way, you need to think about everything from day one so that there are no surprises as the semester goes on. The more planning and preparation that you do beforehand, the better off you are going to be. This is because it will help you get your finances in order early on, allowing you to handle financial issues as they come about rather than struggling to come up with the money at the last moment.

So the time has come. You have been dreaming about this moment throughout high school. Starting college is an exciting time for many teenagers. If you are wondering what you need to take away for college, here are a few ideas.

Clothing

Casual shoes as well as dress shoes

Casual clothes as well as business and dressy clothes

Plenty of underwear and socks

Money

If you can, have some cash in a bank account, in case of emergencies.

If you don’t like the idea of a savings account, a Reach Prepaid Visa Card will allow you to have the funds at your fingertips, should you need them.

Electronics

A laptop or personal computer is vital to get all that studying done. A laptop would be the better option, as dorms can be lacking on space.

Toiletries

Teachers are free to move about the classroom. No longer are instructors tethered to their desks or chained to the blackboard. New technology has made it possible for teachers to freely move around the classroom and deliver their lessons in an interactive way that was never possible before. Interactive whiteboards and electronic communication has given educators new tools to be able to better reach the children of the digital age.

One of the best things happening in classrooms around the country is the installation of interactive whiteboard which are replacing blackboards in a growing number of districts. Teachers can write on these boards like they would on a blackboard, but they can also do so much more. They can be used for showing movies and displaying web sites. When hooked up with the proper projector, these boards can display scanned images or assignments for the whole room to see.

The interactive whiteboards can be equipped with electronic pointers that the teachers can use to highlight material on the board as they carry on a discussion in class. The teachers can also hand the pointer to the students and challenge them to highlight the answer or a problem with an equation. A remote device to operate the board and projector allows the teacher to get out from behind her desk and make a more dynamic presentation of the material.

The best boards are equipped with dual electronic pens which allow the student and teacher to be engaged in exchanging messages at the same time. The interactive whiteboards are an excellent tool to use to improve collaborative learning in the classroom.

It is important to have a variety of focus groups on any college campus. Having such groups will allow students with a particular interest to have an outlet for their interest. In addition, they will likely meet other like-minded people and improve their college experience.

Being able to effectively promote a focus group on campus will help to ensure its success. The more people who know about it, the more people are likely to show up to meetings or to tell their friends about it even if they themselves are not interested in the subject matter. One of the most effective ways to promote a focus group is by using flyers. By posting the information about the group in allowable places throughout campus, it is much more likely that people will see the information about it.

Even in this digital age, relying on popular social media sites as a way to get the word out about a focus group should still be coupled with the use of flyers. By harnessing the modern availability of social media along with the more traditional approach of papering a campus with different brightly colored and attention-getting sheets of paper, you will reach most of the students on campus. You will reach those who are tech savvy as well as those who have not embraced social media as their primary means of getting the latest news on campus. As a result, you are likely to get a better cross section of attendees to your focus group, as well.

Tough economic times usually cause people to run low on money. During these financially rough times it can be tempting to want to turn to one of the hundreds of payday loan companies out there for quick cash. However, a payday loan should only be taken out for certain situations and not for frivolous spending.

Here is a look at what types of situations financial experts recommend getting a payday loan to help with the costs involved.

<img title="Capt.
Medical Emergencies/Expenses

Your health is the most important thing to you and it is important to take care of any medical emergencies that might come up. However, some doctors and hospitals require a down payment on certain types of procedures or medical treatments.

Home Repairs

Shelter is one of the basic essentials people need to survive. Sometimes emergencies such as broken pipes, no heat or a leaky roof might come up and put you into a living situation that is uncomfortable or uninhabitable. A payday loan can help you get the cash you need to hire someone to fix the roof, heat or pipes and create a comfortable living environment.

Home repairs and medical emergencies are just two examples of some of the situations you will face that could require you to need cash quick. Other situations can include car repairs, emergency travel expenses and college tuition. Luckily, payday loans can help you get the funds you need to fix the situation and get back on your feet.

A lot of people think that education is primarily concerned with the acquisition of a degree, and that the degree itself makes all the difference. There are a lot of reasons why this isn’t the case at all, and those reasons are not always the most obvious ones. For one thing, any given institution is not necessarily the best for a particular employer. And for another, often your network matters more than anything else about your education.

Going to and graduating from even the best university is not enough to secure yourself a great academic pedigree for your intended purposes after school ends. For some people, getting a degree is all about getting a great job and socking away the big paychecks down the line. For other people, it’s all about getting the best training in a technical field, so they can forge on as their own boss. Regardless of your individual goals, you can often find very good programs at very inexpensive schools that will teach you what you want to know.

Of course, your network also plays a very significant role in your educational present and future. If you spend your time with average, mediocre people, your future mediocrity is all but assured. But if you spend your time working with, and occasionally in competition against, the people who will do their best to stand at the top, it will help you drive onward toward a top tier position or top tier company yourself. They can also become great contacts later. When it comes around to your network, you really are graded based on who you spend time with.

Being a college student means being able to adapt to a lot of things. Chief among those things is apartments you can afford, instead of apartments that you would actually like to stay in. With this being the case, your apartment choices tend to be fairly limited. However, you can find some great deals out there, even in Chicago.

Chicago apartments have a well deserved reputation for being extremely conservative in the fire codes. They also deserve their other reputation of being expensive as a general rule. While Chi Town is an expensive city, you can find places that are great to sleep in, study in and bring a date to, even if they aren’t the best hangouts when you want to throw a party. Some people adapt to living in super small spaces, but many people find that finding a great apartment for a reasonable price just means making some other kind of sacrifice. Consider your transportation situation, your neighborhood or even taking on roommates if you really want to maximize your pizza budget.

Do you need to live in a “good” neighborhood? Can you ride a bicycle a mile or so to the nearest train depot or bus station? If you can find a way to make a sacrifice, you can often negotiate your rent or find a place that has a lower payment somewhere a little down the street. While it isn’t going to be perfect, figuring out how to adapt to suboptimal circumstances is a valuable part of the college experience. You didn’t think you were just here learning how to party and get a good job, did you?

Are you facing your first term of college with the terrifying realization that you have NO CLUE what you want to study?

You’re probably a well-rounded individual, but you just haven’t found your passion yet. How do you go about choosing what to major in? And will that one choice set the course for the rest of your career and your life?

Personal interest is crucial in picking a field of study – if you don’t like it or you’re not interested in it, don’t torture yourself – but there are other factors to consider, too. One aspect that deserves some scrutiny is a potential major’s earning potential out in the real world of the work force.

Here are the top and bottom five college degrees by starting median salary for 2010-11, as reported by PayScale Inc.:

Top five:

Petroleum engineering $93,000

Chemical engineering $64,800

Nuclear engineering $63,900

Computer engineering $61,200

Electrical engineering $60,800

Bottom five:

Exercise science $32,800

Athletic training $32,800

Social work $31,800

Elementary education $31,600

Child and family studies $29,500

The most popular college major, business administration, came in 35th out of the list of 75 undergraduate college majors, with a median starting salary of $42,900.

Don’t totally count out a career in the lower wage ranks just because you’re not likely to get rich quick. Plenty of jobs with low numbers on the pay stubs make up for it in non-salary perks, benefits and job satisfaction. Take teaching, for example: While salaries are notoriously low, public school teachers enjoy union representation, health and retirement benefits and a nine-month work year!

Why do college applications require you to write an essay about yourself? What are admissions officers looking for in an essay, and how do you go about writing an outstanding one?

Test scores and transcripts may be an indicator of how you can be expected to perform in college, but the admissions essay tells the school about you, the person. Colleges want to attract the best and brightest, partly because a high-quality, diverse campus population contributes to a better learning experience, and partly because they want their graduates to be successful alumni who will support their alma mater.

So even if your SAT scores aren’t stellar and your GPA could use some TLC, a brilliant essay can showcase your ambition, your goals and your creativity. Here are some tips for crafting your best work:

1. Pick an interesting topic. Don’t just talk about your future career plans in generalities. Have a specific goal and tell why you chose it. Or if you don’t yet have specific plans, tell about a major achievement in your life or describe the qualities that set you apart from everyone else. Whatever you choose, make it something you feel passionate about.

2. Grab your reader. Start your essay with something vivid – ask a question, give a short and vibrant description, or make an intriguing statement. Keep your voice natural: Read your essay aloud to your friends and family to make sure it sounds like you. Avoid starting every sentence with the word “I.”

3. Proofread, proofread, proofread! Hardly anyone is perfect with spelling, punctuation and grammar, but turning in a polished essay shows that a) you know how to use resources to make it perfect, and b) you care.

The cost of college hasn’t gotten cheaper over the years. For many people the dream of going to school to get their higher education has become a bit of a financial nightmare. Just trying to make ends meet at the tuition office isn’t close to what they are going through. There is so much more for a person to do that all it takes is one bad week at work or one car repair and a student can go from on track with his or her higher education payments, to wondering what went wrong.

For many students there are very little options when a tuition crisis arises. Loans that a student usually takes out are only available until after the semester. Once the semester starts there are no emergency loans to help bridge the gap. There are very few banks that are going to give college kids a sum of money that low or that quickly to keep them in school. Many banks have a certain protocol to follow and in doing so they must wait days for a decision on an application.

The cost of an education gets bigger. Payday loans are there to bridge the gap. Use them sparingly and you’ll stay on the right track.

Taking courses online is often an attractive option when work, family or location prohibits someone from enrolling in traditional college classes. But it’s not all as easy as lounging around with a laptop. Here are some challenges you should know about:

1. Procrastination. Without regular class meeting times and the motivation to keep up with your classmates, it’s easy to put off doing your studying or your assignments. Plus, life gets in the way! Set aside a block of time each day to concentrate on nothing but your coursework.

2. Plagiarism. You’re already on the Web, and so much information is just a click away … no one will ever find out if you copy and paste, right? Wrong. Read the material, think about it, then restate it in your own words as if you were telling it to someone else. The whole point of learning isn’t to get a grade, but to expand your mind.

3. Minimal effort. When it’s just you and the computer, you have to be your own taskmaster. Don’t let yourself just get by with doing the bare minimum requirements for a class – do your best and take pride in your work.

4. Negative attitudes. You can bet there will be times when your online course seems like a time-waster, a stressor or a burden. Don’t let it turn into a chore. Remind yourself of the reason you began the course and how excited you were to start this adventure.

5. Mistaken assumptions. Do your homework before you select a course! Check out the program thoroughly and make sure the online school is legitimate and accredited, the curriculum meets your needs and the coursework fits with your schedule.

Starting college can be a daunting prospect, especially if you’re the only one of your high school classmates at your new school. The Greek system of fraternities and sororities offers social and leadership activities that can help you adjust, have fun and even gain valuable experience for your resume.

The first Greek letter organization was Phi Beta Kappa, a literary society founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776. Social activities began to take prominence over academic interests in the first half of the 19th century. Currently, houses exist for specific demographics (such as black, Jewish, Christian or gay students) or with a focus on a professional, academic or service orientation.

Students scout out fraternities during Rush Week, attending events and getting to know the members of the houses they’re interested in. Once a house decides to offer membership to a student, he becomes a pledge. Pledges usually have to complete a period of service that proves their dedication and worthiness; if they pass the pledge period satisfactorily, they are initiated into the frat.

Unfortunately, hazing rituals involving humiliation, physical assaults and alcohol are part of the history of some fraternities. But absolutely every national fraternity, as well as every university with a Greek system, officially prohibits hazing. Several fraternities have even established themselves as “dry” houses, meaning they do not allow alcohol.

Why join a fraternity? You’ll bond with dozens of your frat brothers, making connections that could benefit your future career. You’ll practice leadership and philanthropy on campus. You’ll enjoy parties and events that are off-limits to non-Greek students. You may be able to get housing in the frat. And if your house has a colorful past, you’ll have the chance to raise its reputation for the classes that come after you.

With higher education becoming more expensive and admission requirements tightening, many high school seniors are considering community (or junior) colleges as their first choice for pursuing a degree. Community college students constitute 43 percent of all undergraduate students in the United States.

In Fall 2007, 11.8 million adults were enrolled at more than 1,100 community colleges across the nation. The majority (6.8 million) take classes for credit toward a degree; 5 million take non-credit classes for skill building, personal interests or career development. Forty-two percent of community college students are the first members of their families to attend college.

Each community college develops its own mission based on the community it serves; but in general, most exist to provide open access to postsecondary education, prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions, provide workforce development and skills training and offer non-credit programs ranging from English as a second language to skills retraining to community enrichment programs or cultural activities.

It costs far less to attend a community college per year than a public four-year college. In 2007, the average annual tuition and fees for a community college was $2,544; average tuition and fees at a four-year college was $7,020. Still, nearly half of all students attending community colleges receive some form of federal financial aid.

Community colleges offer a vast variety of degree and certification programs in addition to countless non-credit courses. Many offer an associate’s degree in a number of fields, requiring about two years of study. Some have partnered with their state university systems to offer transfer degrees, where students complete two years of general education requirements and enter their four-year school with junior status, ready to concentrate on courses in their major department.

The economy can bring many woes and many blessings. If the economy is doing well, many college graduates are grateful to take advantage and look for well-paying jobs. If the economy is doing poorly, many college graduates find that the jobs are simply not available, and that making their bills on-time each month can be a struggle. However, for college graduates, there is one bill that has to be paid, regardless of income flow. There are certain government programs that can help during times of hardship, but they only last for a specific duration of time, usually a cap of 36 months per program. This means that once the hardship programs—such as forbearance and deferment—expire, a college graduate will not be able to depend on that relief again. One such way to help graduates with the cost of education is by consolidating student loans. It can show graduates how they can save significant amounts of money each month, making the process of paying bills on time that much easier. This is especially true for those that are not able to find jobs that are as high paying as once believed. Graduates are provided a six month grace period, or deferment, after graduation. This means that no payments are to be made on behalf of the student loans. This time gives graduates a preparation period to begin planning how they will repay the loans. Consolidation can also be done during this time, making the student loans more manageable from the beginning of the repayment process. This can help lower the stress of repayment for many graduates as they may have a struggle finding adequate work in a slow job market. It is important for graduates to investigate their options as soon as possible as this can help to save time and energy later on.

With students from all over the world flocking to the United States to attend our colleges, why would anyone consider going overseas from the United States to attend college elsewhere?

The first reason that comes to mind is about experience. Many adults in the United States have never set a foot outside of this country’s borders. A trip overseas would be a learning experience that you would never forget. Immerse yourself in another culture. Learn a new language. Be on your own for the first time ever.

Another reason to leave the country to attend college is to go to specifically learn a foreign language. If you know that you want to teach Italian, then attending school in Italy is a great idea. Many times this can translate into a job for you as well, teaching English in the schools or privately.

Some countries are known for certain subjects over others. If this is the case, you may want to study under a master in your business. For example, attending chef school in France can be very prestigious for American students. Coming back to the states with a degree and good grades from a French cooking school gets your foot in the door at just about any restaurant you choose. A student that wishes to study opera may choose to apply to schools in Italy that are known for their music and their singing. A student who truly believes she has a gift may decide that she wants to study ballet in Russia.

In any of these cases, attending college abroad can be a great experience for American students. Going while you are still young, before you are tied down by a job and family, will give you a lifetime of memories.

Every year the number of students who have taken an online course towards a college degree increases. Some take a class or two online, while others spend their entire college career in online classrooms. Many people have earned their college degrees this way. However, there are some people for whom online schools are not the right fit. There are a few basic principles that will tell anyone whether they can earn their degree online or not.

First, you have to be able to work on your own. If you need a teacher who knows you personally to talk your through steps on your homework or you are a person who learns much more by observing your teacher and fellow classmates in person, then online classes might not work for you.

Time is an important part of learning. You have to make sure that you have the time to do the work required before you sign up.

Commitment is also imperative. If you are constantly saying to yourself that you can do your homework later and you choose to do something else instead, you may find that your lack of commitment ends up costing you your good grades. While many students do not want to believe it, teachers can usually tell if students routinely wait until the last moment to finish their homework. If you are one of those students, and you are constantly making excuses or asking for deadline extensions, your teacher will be less likely to work with you should a real emergency come up.

If you are worried that some of these things might make it difficult to take your classes online, you can find out by signing up for an online class. It is the best way to know for sure. If you can tell you are not keeping up or if your grades are bad, chalk it up to a lesson learned and head back to campus! If you find that you take to the online class well, congratulations! Now let’s order some more classes and get going on that diploma!

The number of people rushing to take online courses every year is staggering. Some people remain unconvinced that online classes are the way to go. While every student is different, students can benefit from online classes in so many ways.

Scheduling. People love that online classes can be taken any time of the night or day. It does not matter what shift you work or what time your kids go to bed for the night. You can take the class and do the coursework when it is right for you. If you or your child are sick one day, you can skip class without penalty because everything will be waiting for you online when you feel better.

Privacy. In a world of social networking and cell phones, many people spend too much time talking about other people’s business. Some of them even talk about their own business, even when we do not want to listen. Taking classes at home can give you the privacy you need to get your work done, not be bothered by others to be study partners, or to combine ideas on special projects.

Costs. Online classes typically cost slightly more than going to school on campus. One major difference though is the cost savings that come in other ways. For example, if you are not traveling back and forth to school, you are saving money on gasoline. You are also more likely to eat at home, so you save money on fast food.

Convenience. It goes without saying that the students who take their classes on campus can’t walk out on a lecture to switch loads of laundry through the washer and dryer. They also can not rock a fussy baby while watching the a required movie or reading a book for a class. For some people, taking college classes on the Internet is just a practical way to go.

If you are not sure if this is right for you, that is understandable. The best way you can decide is to try one out and see how you like it. You might be pleasantly surprised.

With the costs of college rising quickly, many students are looking for ways to save money on their college education. One of the easiest ways to do this is to go to community college. High school graduates may groan about the fact that they have not actually gone away to college if they are still in their home town, and many worry about the education that they will receive there in comparison with the education from a four-year university.

In reality, most of the core classes that one takes during the first one to two years of college are the same no matter what school has enrolled the him or her. Money-wise, taking six or eight courses at a community college at around $1000 makes much more sense when you compare it to the option of taking virtually the same classes at a private, four-year university for three times as much.

Money is also saved in more places than tuition fees. Community colleges rarely have dorms. So, students can choose to live at home or rent an apartment with a roommate. Also, there will be no need to reapply for a job the following summer as you never left town in the first place. This means keeping you job and your paycheck while you are learning.

Do you like to eat? Several dinners per week at Mom’s house, whether you actually live there or not, is one great way to remind them that you love them as much as you love saving money by eating with them instead of in the cafeteria. Besides, at mom’s house, dessert is no extra charge!

Taking a couple of years to go to community college, save your money, and decide what you truly want to be “when you grow up” is okay to do. Learning to plan ahead and make decisions based on fact as opposed to feelings are another part of being a grown-up.

Everyone talks about how exciting it is to complete college and finally move on with their lives. While finishing college is filled with many great things, there is one item that rarely gets discussed and that is the move away from college. For four, five and in some cases even seven years, you have lived in the same college dorm or apartment setting. However, once you graduate it is time to spread your wings and enter the real world. This is more difficult than it sounds. The following is a quick walkthrough of things to consider when making that big move after graduating from college.

Moving Expenses

Over the past few years the number of possessions you have has grown. Many students enter college with a laundry basket filled with items and leave with hundreds of boxes. It is important to consider moving expenses when you plan on moving. Moving expenses can be very costly, so it is a good idea to get some moving quotes before making any final decisions, but it is important that you factor in this amount of money into your move.

Where To Move

Where to move is the biggest concern any college graduate has. Most college graduates have very little money and no job waiting for them and this can make moving into an apartment tough. There are very limited options for you as a college graduate. You can move in with the parents or a friend or get any type of job and move out on your own. If you are moving out on your own it is important to remember that you need to have some type of job in order to rent an apartment.

Moving away from college might seem difficult, but it’s not.

There are literally thousands of articles on ways that you can impress the admissions office at the college of your choice in order to make sure that they give your application a second look. They tell you to be authentic, to be yourself, to be funny, to be charming, and even to be outrageous. Write an amazing essay, videotape yourself doing a ridiculously dangerous stunt, do something that people will notice and remember.

While being yourself is important, the other ideas can turn your application into more of a farce than anything that they will seriously consider. College admissions offices look at all parts of the application when deciding whether or not to consider a student. Even the most outrageous stunt will not get you on the list for consideration if your grades are terrible or if you have been arrested four times in the last year.

Instead, try contacting the office for information as soon as you decide it is on your list of possible schools. When a student applies and the admissions office sees that he or she has been in contact with the college for three years, it makes a difference. It shows that you really do want to go there and that you take academics seriously.

Becoming involved in joint projects between the school and the community can be helpful as well. Not only are you helping the community, but you are happily associating yourself with their institution.

While they may be willing to take a chance on a crazy student who shows some serious potential every now and then, the admissions office has experience in knowing who will and will not be successful at their school. All the funny essays and protest rallies in the country won’t get you into a school if they do not think you will be successful.

Choosing your college courses is an exciting time for most students. Besides finally being in college, it is a chance to decide how you want to spend the rest of your life. You will decide while you are here what career field to go into, where you want to live when you graduate, and often, who you want to spend your life with. A lot of big decisions are going to come over the next four to eight years.

The most important thing to do is decide how many courses you can handle at one time. An outside job, extra-curricular activities, and other things can impact the amount of time you have to spend on homework and classwork.

Make sure that you take enough classes so that you will be able to graduate in the correct number of years. If you don’t, you may end up staying an extra semester to finish up a class or two. In fact, if you have the time and energy, take an extra class during your first or second semester. This way, should you have to withdraw from a class or you fail a class sometime in the future, you will have the extra credits in your pocket to back you up.

Take a couple of required courses each semester. Do not put them all off until the end of your student career. There are a couple of reasons for this. First of all, planning ahead means that you will not be caught off-guard the last semester of college, finding out that you never re-took that one class that you dropped your sophomore year. Secondly, the required courses, also called core courses at some schools, are more likely to transfer in the even that you choose to change schools part way through your college years.

Also, choose several courses that you know that you will enjoy and make sure they are sprinkled throughout your years at college. This is your chance to learn something amazing and interesting, so do not miss out!

Are you looking for colleges? Do you have a particular major in mind, but unsure of where to locate a high-quality school that offers coursework in that area?

If you are looking for some reliable and current information on different colleges and universities and requirements for enrollment, there are dozens of resources available to help you.

One method for getting started is to make a list of your criteria. Are you looking for a university that offers a competitive chemistry program or a school that shines in the performing arts? Are you mainly interested in location or price. Make a short list and then use these key words and phrases to help you do a quick search in your favorite search engine online. While not all of the information you want will be shown, this initially is a good place to start.

Next make an appointment with your high school counselor to learn about any information he or she may have. Colleges and universities often advertise through high schools, so your guidance counselor can be a source for a wealth of helpful information.

Also, don’t be hesitant to call colleges and universities themselves to get information. While they may not have time to explain all you need to know, they can put you in contact with persons who can help, or direct you to their online website, or send you necessary college information and applications by mail.

Also do some research in your local library. They archive many magazines which have helpful information. Many national magazines have information regarding schools, their programs, and list their national ranking. This can give you a simple overview and help you know where to go to do further research.

Lastly, if there is a particular career or employment you are considering, speak with someone in that field and get their recommendation on appropriate schools to attend that would prepare you to work in that particular career.

If you are receiving informational brochures littered with photographs of college campuses, it’s just another sign that high school graduation is fast approaching and that a college or university education is on the horizon. This is a great time of opportunity and big decisions that will have not only an impact on the next few years of your life, but your future career as well.

It will be essential for you to research your choices carefully and to put your best foot forward throughout the application process. Since your college application is really a way of introducing yourself to a college or university, it is important to do it right. Below are some helpful hints to remember throughout the admissions process.

Whether you are applying to a few select schools or a number of them, it is important to note the deadlines for various applications on your calendar, preferably a digital calendar. This way you can have the system automatically send you reminder emails. Even if your transcript and application are seller, a college or university won’t accept it if it is past due.

Once your deadlines are noted, make a plan of how long it will take to fill out each application or write/type each essay. Plan ahead and make a schedule time to get it done. If you want to get into a prestigious school or one that offers a top curriculum, you need to show them right off that you can put effort into their application.

Approach your application and entrance essay with some thought and creativity. You may be the fashion queen or the sports buff at school, but a college could care less. Colleges and universities want students that will make their school look good and improve their overall ranking. You need to show from the simple information about yourself to the winner essay, that you will benefit the school and can make a difference.

Now that the end of your high school career is fast approaching, it may seem daunting to choose which college or university you would like to attend. You know you want to continue your education and gain a Bachelor’s degree and maybe even a Master’s degree, but it is difficult to make this important choice. Considering the wealth of college information available and evaluating what is best for you is essential.

There are many benefits of attending a four-year accredited university. Your degree will have more sway on a resume and play a key factor in landing lucrative and productive employment. Coursework and internships offered through four-year universities will better prepare you for future careers rather than college classes and programs which can be completed in a shorter amount of time.

When considering a college or university, be sure to remember the benefits of a four-year education. Talk with those who have graduated from various schools you are looking at attending. Teaching methods, student feedback, and overall students out coming success are only some of the things to weigh in the balance.

It is not just about signing up for classes. You must remember that after college, you’ll be looking for a job, so find the schools that offer the best possible coursework to prepare you for employment in your desired field.

Also take a look at a school’s admission process, fees, overall cost, and enrollment procedures. If admissions is very limited, then your chances may be better at another university or college where more students are accepted. Look at class enrollment. If the classes are smaller, this may be an advantage and help you have a better educational experience.

There are many factors to consider in choosing a college, but you will reap the benefits of choosing wisely. It will better ensure employment security and success in the future.

The idea of studying in a foreign country can be a lot of fun, but it also takes some preparation. If you’re interested in studying in Canada, you can certainly do that with the right credentials. You’ll need a passport, and you’ll need to get accepted to a school there. There are a lot of international student exchange programs through various schools, too, and you might want to consider going to school in Canada through that type of program. You would be sent from the school you already attend, and you would go to a Canadian school for a specific amount of time, before returning. There are other ways to get into exchange programs, too.

The opportunity to learn another language, meet new people, and experience a completely different culture is something that a lot of people are very interested in, especially during their college years. If you use Canada 411, you can find ways to get into student exchange programs and have all of those kinds of experiences. Be sure you know what kind of area you want to live in, though, because you’ll want to look for a school in the kind of place you like. If you want to be around a lot of younger people and have social events to go to, hunt down a school (and a program) that offers those kinds of things.

If you’re an older learner, or you would just prefer to have a quieter experience, you can do that, too. You may not be able to get your first choice in some cases, so look for a few alternatives that would also be good. That way you can have a rich experience and really enjoy what you’ll get in your international student exchange program. It will be something you’ll remember all your life.

High School is a time for further education, taking accelerated courses, participating in sports and other extra curricular activities, but most of all; High School prepares students, like you, for college. Making the jump from high school life to a college or university can be a big one. It is important for you to keep in mind some of the following tips which will help you have a smoother transition.

First of all, remember that in high school, you were most likely required to take certain classes and go to school for a certain number of hours. In college you have a lot more freedom and flexibility in your schedule. Review your major and the course work required. If you are a “morning person,” consider taking some of your more difficult classes when you are most alert and attentive. If you are working, spread your classes over evenings and weekends. Be smart, and plan your schedule to fit your needs.

Secondly, it may seem overwhelming that you are one of hundreds of students in a particular class. Do not be intimidated. Take time to introduce yourself to the teacher and get his or her contact information. Although, he or she may not remember your name among so many students, it is important to make the initial contact and build a student-teacher relationship. This will make it easier for you to approach the teacher later on in the course, if you should have any questions or struggles with the class.

Do not be afraid to use the many resources at your college or university to help you succeed. Many teachers have assistants and tutors which can lend extra help. Many departments have counselor’s who can lend support and offer crucial advice. There also are librarian staff who specialize in certain areas. If you are challenged by a particular subject, they can be very helpful in locating resources to help you find needed information.

The good thing about being in school is you are gaining a skill to help you earn more money in the future. The hard part is you need money right now. You need it to live on and to pay for parts of your education right now.

Here are six ways to get money while in school.

1) Get a job. Just because you are in school does not mean that you cannot work. It might not be easy, but you can work. Two excellent jobs for students include being a receptionist and working the booth for a parking garage. Often you have hours of down time where you are allowed to work on your homework. (Make sure the boss is OK with this.)

2) College work-study programs. These jobs work around your changing schedule and some even give you the opportunity to study while getting paid.

3) Grants are often given by schools, the government or other organizations. Each of these grants has specific qualifications. Some areas are economic, race, gender, age, current career or future career.

4) Like grants, Scholarships are based on a criterion that is determined by who is giving the money. Talk to your financial aid office and they should help you in your search.

5) Often employers will reimburse you for classes you have taken. You usually have to apply before the classes start and then give the final grade with receipts to get your reimbursement, but it is an excellent way to pay for college without incurring much, if any, debt.

6) There are educational loans from the government and other sources. These can be expensive to pay back.

School is expensive. Take the time to earn money as you go, seek for efficient ways to use your time, accept grants, scholarships and reimbursements wherever you can and get loans when you need to. School might be expensive but it is worth it and it is doable!

Try to go one day without math.

When you get up in the morning and try to cook your breakfast, turn off the stove because it is governed by math. The temperature is determined by math. The surface is flat and level because engineers, designers and the installer used math. When your stove was installed they put a level on the surface and watched the bubble go up (too high) and down (too low). This is math at it’s simplest but it IS math.

Then you get dressed and put on your shirt: first one arm in a sleeve and then the other. More math! Even putting the shirt together uses more math; so many inches along this seam and then the other, how much fabric for each shirt, how many shirts out of each bolt of fabric.

Head out of the house and climb onto the bus. You can’t use cash because that is blatant math…counting it out it to put it in the drop box. You can’t use a credit card because it keeps track of your balance (math) which you have to pay at the end of the month.

OK, ignore the bus. You can walk to school. Do you have the time? Time is math. It is determined in a mathematical calculation based on the rotation of the earth divided into equal time compartments. Today’s date? Also math, based on the Earth’s rotation around the Sun.

Lunchtime! Math is used to calculate the cost to purchase a meal, both in what the store is charging you and how you earned the money. You work for a mathematical amount per hour or per job. Consider the cost of the land and all the components that went into getting the original seed to grow, be harvested and arrive at your table.

Math is impossible to avoid. Try it for one day. Or even one hour…

Your professor has told you that you need to write a paper for his class. You sit down with your computer and type in the subject for your paper: “internet security.” Google responds with over 306,000.000 results.

The problem with using Google search is that it gives too many results and they are also usually not authoritative. They might be interesting but the professor usually wants good reliable sources. Google might or might not give you that…usually not.

So you swing over to Wikipedia, it has interesting articles. Academia has a love / hate relationship with Wikipedia. It has some very well written articles but it also has material that is pure fabricated fantasy. The nature of the site is “he who edited last…wins” This is not good for a scholarly paper.

Your best option is to turn to your schools virtual library. Almost all schools have a virtual library where you can find books, magazines, journals and other sources of excellent articles.

The key for most of these sources is that they are peer reviewed. This means that before they are published they are read and reviewed by other professionals within the same field. Corrections are made and then the article is published. It is this review by peers that makes these articles so much better and more reliable than an equivalent article in a magazine published monthly and written by a writer who has just enough knowledge to write the article but not to determine the reliability of their sources.

These articles can be a gold mine of very interesting and state-of-the-art advancements within your field of study. You can read about the technologies that are being studied that you will see marketed in three to five years.

The key to great papers in college is your sources. Always look to peer reviewed articles for the most reliable information which means you need to turn to your schools virtual library.

If you are attending a community college, be proud of it! You had good reasons for your decision. Too often students say they are “just going to the community college” like it is less worthy. In reality, they are going to a school they decided was the best option for them.

Some students prefer to live at home their first year, to save money. It is usually cheaper to stay with parents than to live away from home, even if you pay rent and contribute to food. Tuition cost is often lower at a community college as well.

Some students prefer the smaller class sizes that may be offered in a community college. Many universities have huge classes that make you feel like a nobody. If you prefer interaction with the teacher and other students, community college is a better option. You will probably learn more and get better grades.

Some university classes, especially the first two years, are taught by graduate students rather than professors. At a community college, unless it is affiliated with a university, you are more likely to be taught by full professors or part-time instructors who teach as a sideline. This is a mixed bag with no guarantees, but odds are in your favor that you will get an experienced professor.

Some people go to a community college to get their general education out of the way, earning an Associate’s Degree and then transferring with full general education credits. Some get the Associate’s Degree in their field and that’s all they want so they can get a job. Many universities only offer Bachelor’s and higher.

Some students attend community college for a specific program, such as a trade or design, that is not offered at a university.

Whatever your reason, do your best and stand tall and say “I am getting my education at ABC Community College.”

After the excitement of the first day of class the reality of actually having to read a textbook hits you right between the eyes. Often the class demands for you to read the textbook. Sometimes the assignment is to read 100 pages!

Study the book in steps. First scan through the assigned pages, reading only titles and headlines, including the pictures and their captions. This will give you a feel for the material and an overview of the concepts of the course chapter or chapters. This overview of the 100 pages should only take about 10 or 20 minutes. Sometimes it will take as little as five minutes.

Now go back through the assignment again, looking at the bold text and the material immediately surrounding it. Read any of the sidebars or text boxes. These specially marked text areas are what the authors felt were the most important areas. This perusal of the reading will take longer but will still normally not take more than an hour.

Without any other reading you have most of what you need to understand. Reading further in the text will bring out areas that you need to learn. Delving deeper will also allow you to grasp concepts in a deeper way. This third pass through the text now builds from the initial general understanding and the second conceptual understanding and really allows you to internalize the concepts. You know what is coming next; the ideas will take root in your mind. This pass through the book can be just a few minutes or it can be hours.

Stopping at step two will often garner you a “B” and even an “A” but the third step can make the biggest difference to you professionally. Are you going to school for the grade, or for the job at the end of school? Step three can make a huge difference to the job you get!

You’re thinking about college and trying to decide whether you should go to a university or a technical school. This is a good question and one that no one besides you can answer. However, there are differences between them and they are major.

Universities provide a general, broad based education. They are designed to make you think in many different areas, besides your primary interest. You will probably have classes in psychology, geography, physics, math, history, art and others. You will spend almost two years of your education outside your major.

The major will then be heavy in the logic of how your subject works. If you will be majoring in computers you will have memory logic classes and database processes classes which teach you how computers think and process.

Meanwhile, technical schools give a specific hands-on approach to learning. You will have some classes in math, English, etc. but they will not tend to be as broad based nor as in-depth as the University classes. What you will get is much more hands on on how they work. Looking at computer majors in a technical school you would find them learning how specific operating systems work like Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 or even delving into how Linux works.

Be aware that transferring from a university to a technical school or from a technical school to a university can be frustrating because very few credits will transfer in either direction. They just do not teach even close to the same material and therefore will not accept much of the others classes. This is normal and expected.

If you are a person who loves to understand the underpinnings of how things work or really enjoy learning all sorts of different things then a university might be the right choice for you. However, if you go to sleep in lectures and crave hands on, then a technical school might be just the ticket.

Is there a secret formula for success in school? Yes there is! A(S+H)^1 = success!

A. Attend your classes. This is the number one secret for all the A students out there. It does not matter which type of school you attend. If you go to class, you will understand the material better. You will get your questions answered by someone who knows the material. You will score higher on tests.

S. Sit in the first two or three rows, especially if your classroom is large. You will be able to hear much better. There will be fewer people in front of you to distract you and allow your attention to wander. Have you heard that grades can practically be handed out on the first day? A’s go to the first few rows, B to the next few, then C– and the back of the room is mostly D’s and F’s—who are there once in a while. There we are back to attendance again.

Struggling students have found that attending class and sitting in the right place can help. If you are lost, move forward and ask questions. You will learn much faster. If the class is not the type you can ask questions, sit next to a student in the first couple rows. Ask front-row students for help after class. Many students are willing to help others. The student who shares will also learn, because no one learns better than the teacher.

H. Homework. Do it. You can’t expect to learn all you need to know in class. Do your homework and join study groups or get a tutor.

1. Yourself. You have the power of one, applied.

What is the secret to success in college, whether it is a university, community college or technical school? The secret to success in any college class is simple: attend class and sit close to the front. Simple!

When you transfer from one college or university to another they will often accept some of your credit but not all of it. Each school is designed to have you graduate with a specific set of knowledge and skills. As the Registrar looks over your transcript they will examine each of the classes you have taken. They are looking for classes that appear similar to classes in their own school. They may open a catalog from the other school and compare the other school’s classes to their own. The key for you as a new student is that the Registrar cannot accept or transfer any credits which do not match their curriculum.

If the two classes match perfectly, the Registrar will normally accept the credit without reservation. If they partially match then it is up to the discretion of the registrar. Politics will sometimes enter here. If the credits were earned at a “lesser” school the “superior” school might be less forgiving of discrepancies in the curricula of the classes. For example, a registrar of a major university may not accept coursework from a community college. If you received your Associate’s Degree, your classes may be accepted as a block that covers General Education courses or prerequisites.

When two classes taught at the old school match what is taught in one course at the new school, the registrar may accept the credit from the combined classes as one class, and grant credit for only one class. This may happen in classes where the University teaches a class in one semester, while the previous school allows you to take it over two semesters to make it easier.

As you consider transferring, you can ask a registrar at prospective schools to evaluate your credit so that you can use that as one factor in your choice of schools, along with cost, location, available majors, and other factors.

Applying to an online college can seem like a very daunting task. When you start looking at the process it seems like there are endless steps. However, most schools make every effort they can to make the task as quick and painless as possible, while still gathering all of the required information. For this example I will walk through the steps of applying at an online technical school. The steps may vary slightly depending on where you apply, however it should give you a good idea of what to expect with the application process.

First, you will need to apply for financial aid. The website of FAFSA on the web (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will guide you step by step at doing this. You will just need some basic information about you, your household’s income, and last year’s tax records. If you wind up with any questions or problems you can contact your chosen school’s financial aid department and they will likely be able to help you with finding the answer.

After you do this you will have around a week’s wait to get approval for financial aid. Depending on what you are awarded you may need to provide your own additional funding or get a loan, something your financial aid office will assist you with. Then you will simply fill out the school’s application form and take it, your transcripts of high school grades or previous college work, and an application fee to your school’s registration office.

You may be approved that day, or if it is a school with higher requirements you may find out another day. Once you are approved to attend the school, you can start registering for classes. Decide which program you want to enter. For example, if you want to study photography, your counselor will suggest the right online photography degree program for you. You will then choose your classes for the first semester. Then, you are all set for your first year of college, and another step toward a successful career!

One option that many people don’t immediately consider when deciding where to go for college or higher education, is a specialty school. There are schools devoted to learning many different skills or trades that may be good choices for many people. There are benefits as well as drawbacks to these types of schools, many of which will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

The main benefit to a specialty school is that the training and classes will be tailored to what you need in the workforce. Many of these programs award certificates or diplomas instead of degrees which do not require as many of the core classes that would be required when getting a degree. If you are just wanting to advance in your career you may not need to take advanced math classes, chemistry, history or literature. Another related benefit is that you can normally obtain a certificate or diploma in much less time than it would take you to go to a full university. This is an excellent option for those with already established careers who are hoping to advance, as they will not have to take time away from their careers to attend school and may even be able to do much of their class work online at home.

However, there are certain drawbacks to specialized schools. A diploma or certificate may not have the same positive impact on your resume as a traditional degree would. Also, most specialized schools are not publicly funded, which makes them more expensive to attend and often times harder to get scholarships and grants. The best specialized schools will have financial aid counselors who can help you work through the paperwork and perhaps apply for what grants or loans are available. The drawbacks are often worth it in the end when you finally achieve your educational goals.

One of the programs commonly available at technical schools and community colleges is the business administration program. This is typically offered in either a diploma or associates degree program. Someone who is looking to find employment as an office manager or assistant would find a degree in business administration very useful. Many technical and online schools will allow you to earn your degree while still working a full time job.

The difference between a degree and diploma is generally based around how many additional core courses are offered along with the required area-specific courses. Someone seeking a diploma may only have to take classes that deal with information they may need in the workforce, while someone who obtains a degree will likely have to take classes in general English, college level algebra, and the social sciences.

The types of area-specific classes that will be encountered while someone is earning a degree or diploma in business administration are quite varied. There will generally be a few classes in computer basics, word processing, spreadsheets, accounting, management and supervisory development and possibly marketing.

People who have strong communication skills and a good grasp on technology will generally do well in a business administration program. Many job seekers find that even a diploma or certificate in this area is a great help in finding employment in an office setting. Over the past few years with the job market being very tight and with little growth, those who have higher education consistently report an easier time finding employment and higher satisfaction with their jobs.

After receiving a degree in business administration, some students may find that they wish to work on more specific job skills. A degree in business administration is a great jumping off point for education in the realms of accounting, finance, business management, and computer science.

Many adults would like to go back to college but feel very overwhelmed by the college experience. They imagine that college is like it is shown in the movies, a giant campus with thousands of students all around 20 years old. This may be true in some cases, but there are many other options that may be more comfortable for the adult learner.

One of these options is a technical school. No matter where you live in the country, there is likely a technical school within fifty miles from your home. And now through internet technology, many classes are available online too.

A technical school will generally offer associates degrees, diplomas, and certificates. One misconception many people have about technical schools is that they are only for learning about computers or other technological fields. This is far from the truth. Many schools offer classes in computers, business, medicine, drafting, art, childcare, hair care and a host of other fields. Visit the website of your local technical school and you will be certain to find a program that sparks your interest.

These technical schools often have students of all ages and backgrounds. There will be students fresh out of high school, working adults, and senior citizens who are expanding their knowledge after retirement. The teachers at technical schools are used to helping a diverse range of students and there are often special programs available to help adults who are just now re-entering the educational world after spending time in the workforce.

Don’t let your fear of college get in the way of chasing your dreams. The college experience can and will be different for everyone who attends. Research your options, talk to current students and spend time on the campus of anywhere you are considering attending to make sure it is an environment that will help you reach your goals.

With all of the options currently available to potential students, why would anyone want to go to a traditional four year university? That is a valid question, and one with many answers. For many people, a complete well-rounded college experience can only be obtained at a four year college.

There are many fields of study that simply require someone to get a full four-year bachelors degree from a traditional school. Online education has grown in leaps and bounds, but they will never replace traditional colleges for fields such as medicine, science and other lab related fields. No book or computer program can compare with the hands on experience a student can get while attending university.

Technical schools and community colleges have filled a need for educational programs that only require a couple of years of schooling, but they cannot handle the wide range of classes that someone who is seeking a bachelors degree needs. Additionally, many students wish to go further than their bachelors degree and a traditional university is more likely to have connections to help them reach their goals.

Another important benefit that four-year colleges offer is the overall college experience. These schools have on campus housing, sports teams, clubs and a Greek system that can offer students long lasting friendships and future business connections. A student who wishes to pursue college or professional sports will likely need to attend a four year university to gain the notice of sports scouts or agents.

Students who choose to live on campus can also become more immersed in their studies and (depending on their own study habits) may have fewer distractions than students who try to attend a school part time and work while living away from the school. For young students especially, going to college at a four-year university will give them the chance to move from being a child who relies on their parents for everything to being a self-sufficient adult.

For most technical schools and community colleges there are very few requirements for enrollment. Some basic requirements are: a transcript of schools previously attended, financial aid documents (if needed) or pre-payment of classes, proof of citizenship and residence, and required testing.

A sealed transcript will generally be required, to insure that it has not been tampered with in any way. This can usually be gotten for a small fee from the last school you attended. If it is another college it will include any college credits received or attempted as well as any testing done. If the student has only a high school education it will show grade point average, SAT scores and other pertinent information. Finally, if the student has a GED it will include the final testing scores when the student took the GED tests.

Financial aid documents will vary from school to school and depending on the financial aid requested. Typically asked for will be tax records from the previous year, information about household income and information about other financial aid the student may have received in the past. If the student chooses to pay for classes themselves it will generally be required prior to classes beginning.

Proof of citizenship and residence may or may not be required depending on the school attended. Many schools serve students from around the world, but they will simply need information about their citizenship for record keeping purposes. Proof of residence can be required if the school only serves students in a certain geographical area, which is not common.

The final thing many schools require is testing records. Most schools require some form of pre-admission testing, be it SAT’s, ACT’s or Compass testing. These tests are often offered at the colleges themselves for those who have not tested elsewhere in the past.

Many people are interested in a career in the medical field, but do not know how to get into this rapidly growing career area. Some people think that to get a job in medicine that you have to go to school for years and then spend another couple of years as an intern before you will have a chance to enter the workforce. Yes, this is what is required to become a doctor, but there are tons of different jobs available that may only need a two year associate’s degree or even a technical certification that can be obtained in a short eight week class.

There are several different types of nursing programs available. An RN degree usually takes four years to obtain, an LPN (licensed practical nurse) requires a two year degree, but a person can achieve a CNA (certified nursing assistant) certification in just a few months. There are many rewarding career options for people who earn any of these degrees or certifications. Another similar position is that of a medical assistant which can usually be earned in two years or less, often with mostly online classes.

There are many other options in the medical field that are not nursing related. There are careers such as a lab assistant, phlebotomist, radiology assistant, medical transcriptionist, medical office billing specialist and many others that interested individuals can earn certifications in at local technical schools or through online coursework. These fields are diverse and many of these areas will only grow in the future as more and more of the baby boomers reach the age where they start requiring more and more health care. A student who is knowledgeable in technology as well as the medical field should have no trouble obtaining and keeping a job in the medical field over the next few years.

One decision many people have when deciding to go back to school is whether they should attend a traditional school or an online school. While this is a very personal decision there are three things that potential students have to consider when going through this process. They are: quality of education, what environment is most conducive to their learning, and what type of school will fit into their lifestyle best.

Many online schools offer teachers and educational programs that are comparable to those of traditional colleges. The degrees obtained are just as good as one received at a college that requires attendance in the classroom. However, there are many schools that are simply diploma mills, so make sure and do extensive research before signing up for one of these colleges to make sure you are not wasting your time and money on an education that will not help you to obtain employment once you are finished. Another consideration is whether the program you are interested in translates well to online education. Classes that require hands on learning may not be the right choice for an online education.

Some people have trouble sitting still for a full length class and an online education would be a great choice for them. Others however may not have the self-motivation that taking classes online requires. Often, classes never meet face to face and you may have to pace yourself to get work done when it is required and seek outside help if you have trouble understanding.

Finally, anyone thinking about going back to school needs to determine what type of education will fit in with their lifestyle best. Someone who has young children may prefer to go to a traditional school part time so they can have a quieter learning environment. Those who are in the workforce may need online classes to fit school in around their jobs.

Once you have decided what type of school you plan to attend you now need to decide exactly what school you want to enroll in. If you have chosen to go to a technical school or community college that is based in your local area you have the benefit of being able to learn more about these schools in a very personal manner. Pretty much every school will be very excited for you to come down and learn more about their campus and educational programs. You can learn about what programs are offered by looking online, but there are several different things you need to look for and observe if you are making a school visit.

First, while you are at the school, take a look around any student or community areas and see if there are any extracurricular activities listed. A school with an active student body will be more likely to offer programs, clubs and activities that will appeal to you. Joining a club or other student group will help you to feel like an important part of the school and will help you make lifelong friends and business connections.

Next, take time to talk to students who are relaxing in the student center or cafe. Find out if they are happy with the quality of education they are receiving. You can learn so much more from someone who is already there and experiencing the school than you can from a flyer or web page.

Finally, see if you can spend time talking with a teacher in the subject you are interested in. You may be able to figure out if the school has the same focus on your chosen subject area that you are looking for. A great school gets that way because of the quality of educators that work for it.

College education can be one of the most financially challenging things anyone will undergo. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Anyone who is considering going to college or a specialty school needs to look at all of the financial options available before they commit to something that can potentially change their financial future.

First, everyone who is thinking about going to school should first fill out the FAFSA on the internet. This is a form that will take about forty five minutes to fill out and can be done with just some simple information about your household income and last year’s tax records. This is the first step to getting financial aid. This automatically qualifies you for the Federal Pell Grant if this is something that you are financially qualified to receive. It will also be what your school needs to determine if you qualify for any additional state financial aid.

Next, take your information from the FAFSA to your chosen school’s financial aid office and talk with the counselor on duty about what options are available for you. There may be grants or scholarships you have not considered. There are scholarship programs targeted at nearly every type of potential student out there.

Once you have exhausted all these possibilities you should have a much better idea of what further funding you will need. This is where you will need to decide if you want to get a school loan to cover the balance or if you would be more comfortable paying the costs out of pocket. This can be a good option if you have savings or a job that can cover expenses. Taking out a school loan can seem scary, but is one of the most secure lines of credit available and they often have low interest rates or deferred payments.

Many people wonder what it is like to take online classes. Those who are considering going back to school often think that it will be much easier to go to an online school than to attend a traditional school. There are benefits and drawbacks to both types of schools but anyone who is thinking about an online school would do well to learn as much about what they will be required to do before they invest time and money in enrolling in classes.

Online classes will often take as much or more of a student’s time than traditional classes. It will require a student to put in time to learn material partially on their own. There are at times online lectures available but it is not the same as a classroom lecture where the class interacts with the instructor and the instructor moves at the pace of the students.

A student taking classes online will be required to master all coursework on their own and find outside tutoring if they are having trouble keeping up. Many students think that all online classes will be easy because they will have access to books and notes when testing, this is often counteracted by the teacher doing more testing that is time limited or in essay format. This will help the teacher understand how the student actually comprehends the lessons and not how good they are at finding the answers in a book.

A final consideration is whether you as a student have the self-motivation to log on and do the work without having a teacher putting regular deadlines on homework assignments. Teachers of online classes will often allow the work to be turned in all at the end of the quarter, but this is not always going to be for the best interest of the student to wait to complete the work all at once.

Attending a technical school or community college can be a great experience for anyone looking to increase their career options or simply broaden their education. Once the student is registered they may not know what to expect once classes begin. This can be especially scary for adults who have been in the workforce for many years and haven’t attended school since technology began taking such an important role in the classroom.

Walking into class your first day can be daunting. One way to help ease the transition is learning everything you can about your classes before day one. Many classes have online components that can be accessed prior to the first day of physical classes. If you class is set up like this, see if you can get your log in information from the college so you can read everything available online. The class syllabus and book requirements are often right there, so you will know if you need a certain textbook or materials for the class.

Many classes now have computers available for student use. Depending on your class you may use these extensively during class time or only for certain projects. Learning how to log on to the computer before your first day will help you to feel more at ease when class work begins. If your teacher does not want you to use the computers for class work, you should refrain from using them during class time for personal use. Also, you should not use your cell phone, PDA or other device during class time. Most teachers would prefer you did not text message or browse the internet while they are teaching. Not only is this rude to the teacher, it will make it much harder for you to concentrate on the lecture and participate in the class.

If you spend much time watching daytime television you have more than likely seen commercials for specialty schools. These are schools that generally offer education in one or more targeted educational area. One of the most common type of specialty school offers classes in medical assisting or medical billing, but there are schools for cosmetology, business administration, accounting, legal assisting and more. You may wonder if these schools are a good way to further your education. There are many reasons to consider these schools when you are trying to decide where to go to school, but there are also many things you need to learn before you spend your hard earned money and precious time on a school like this.

First, you need to research any school you intend to enroll in. Most of these schools are for-profit businesses, and while they may offer top-notch education, their main interest is in making money. Research online and talk to former students to decide if the school is going to offer you the education you are hoping to receive. If you find that many former students are having trouble finding jobs in their chosen fields you may want to keep looking for the right school for you.

You also need to fully understand what you will get for the time you spend attending classes. Will you receive a certificate of credit, a diploma or an associate’s degree? The difference between these can be significant, especially in the medical field. Generally, the shorter and easier the classes seem like they are going to be the less your awarded credits will mean in the workforce. This may not matter in some cases, so your best bet is to research what kind of education is needed for the job you one day hope to get.

A question that many people who are considering furthering their education have is What is the difference between a technical school and a community college? This is a very important question with a couple of different and important answers.

First, a community college generally offers a broader range of classes more geared toward core classes like math, social studies, and English and literature. A technical college is more geared towards jobs in the technical fields such as the medical, electrical, automotive and other trades. This is not always the case, but you will generally find more classes geared towards those types of fields at a technical school.

The more important difference between community colleges and technical colleges is that when you go to a community college you are assured that your classes are transferable to a four year school. This mostly makes a difference if you anticipate going to a university later on.

On the flip side, technical colleges will often offer their own Bachelor’s degrees while a Community college only offers up to a 2 year associates degree. Checking out what degrees are offered and what credits will transfer is a very important consideration for anyone who may be planning to attend either type of institution.

The quality of training is likely to be very similar at either type of school. There will be good schools and bad schools in both types. Check out online reviews and talk to former students before committing to attend either type of school. The financial aid available to students is likely to be similar for both schools as long as they are both part of the state college system. This is information that should be easily available by checking out the school’s website or by talking to someone in the registrar’s office or on the information hotline.

A common question by many people who are considering going back to school is “How do I apply for an online school?” This is a very valid question and will vary somewhat from school to school, but we can guide you through what the process will generally be like for most online schools.

First, once you have done some research and think that you have a school in mind that you would like to attend you will usually fill out a simple form directly on their website. This will allow the school to send you some official brochures and more than likely will get a recruiter to call you and talk to you directly about your concerns and questions.

Next, if you are certain the school is right for you, you will begin the process of obtaining any possible financial aid and paying for your classes. Depending on the school and your circumstances you may qualify for federal grants, scholarships or student loans to help pay for or defray some of the costs of attendance. You will fill out the FAFSA on the web to see if you qualify for federal aid, and the school will refer you to a bank that deals in student loans if you will be financing any of your education. Any remaining costs will likely need to be paid before your classes begin.

Finally, you may need to take some tests from the school or provide transcripts so they can make sure you are in the classes that you need to obtain your desired degree or diploma. The school may have their own specialized tests or they may want you to take the SAT, ACT or COMPASS test to see how your grasp of math and English is. The school will likely enroll you in remedial classes if you do not meet the testing requirements for enrollment.

Before spending time and money going to college or going through a technical training program, you may want to determine if furthering your education is going to pay off for you. Becoming more educated is nearly always a good thing, but there are certain cases where you may want to consider looking outside your field when going back to school.

For instance, if you already have a good job as an office worker you might not want to get a degree in business administration. Working in the field already, you will likely not learn much nor is there much room to grow in your current position. In this case you may think about going to school for accounting or maybe supervisory development. A degree in one of these fields would likely give you more career possibilities than simply getting one in the field you are already familiar with.

Diversifying your knowledge is going to impress future employers. You will be able to list your experience utilizing business administration in an office setting and can additional list your classroom knowledge in your new field which will make you appear well rounded and like an employee that may be management material.

There is nothing more frustrating than spending months or years of your time working on a degree, and having a load of student debt to accompany it and then not being able to find a better job than the one you already have. During your time in school, take care when choosing your electives to pick classes that will translate well to your resume. Knowing conversational Spanish will likely come in handy more often than having knowledge of modern art. Your educational experience will be with you for the rest of your life, so make the most of every opportunity provided.

Winter can be a difficult time for students at college. The cold weather can prove difficult for them as they often have little spare time to eat healthy and take care of themselves. Many students even limit the amount they spend on heating during the winter as money is tight, which can be disastrous for their health. Sending care packages can be a great way to make sure your children are being taken care of during the winter, as well as lift up their spirits during what can be a gloomy time of year for many.

One great gift that you can easily give to your children in a care package is protection against a cough and cold. Many people can come down with illness during the winter but the danger is especially applicable to students, whose close living conditions can breed germs and bugs. Vitamin C tablets and headache medicine are great things to include, as well as items of protective clothing such as gloves or a scarf.

Students love to eat and winter can be a great time to send them all sorts of warming snacks. Biscuits and crisps can be useful as they are easy to eat and can be munched while they study. Of course, hot drinks like cocoa will alway go appreciated as well, especially when the cold nights start to close in! For that extra personal touch, why not make some home made brownies or chocolate chip cookies and include them in the package?

Small gift items are also sure to go down well during the holidays. A seasonal card telling your children the things that you’ve been doing and how much you miss them will lift their spirits. You could even include some pictures of the family in festive poses to give them a laugh.

The website of the school you are planning to attend can be a very valuable resource for prospective students. The website will give you a good idea of what the school can offer you as well as let you know what is required of you for enrollment and registration.

Most college websites have a financial aid section which can be a very important source of information for students. Here you will find information about what documents you will need, what forms you will need to fill out and what types of financial aid the school accepts. Depending on the school, they may or may not handle student loans directly through financial aid, something that you need to know before you get ready to enroll.

Another important section of the website will be the course catalog. This will show what areas of study are offered and what classes are available for students that choose to study in this field. Knowing ahead of time what you want to major in and what types of classes you plan to take can make registering easier for a first time student.

For students who are interested in a well-rounded college experience, the website will likely show what sports, clubs and other activities the college offers. There may be information to help you get in touch with those who are in charge of these activities; this will help you make sure you get involved as soon as possible after becoming an official student.

As you can see, the college website is very important even before you are actually enrolled in the school. Make sure you spend plenty of time pursuing this resource and contacting school officials by email or phone to answer all of your questions. You will be glad you went through this effort once the registration process has begun.

Meeting with a college admissions officer for the first time can feel overwhelming to a high school student. Knowing the right questions to ask can help you to get what you want out of a conversation with an admissions officer when they visit your high school or you visit their office. Admissions officers are the first people many students meet on campus and their job is to provide you with information to make a good choice about your college admissions process.

“Tell me about the first year of college?”

Many colleges have special programs for first year college students, unique housing options, and classes that are required during the first year. Asking about the first year college experience can help you to learn about the culture of the campus, what you could expect in the first year, and how people on campus work to make the first year of college a good experience for new students.

“What makes this school stand out?”

Having the admissions officer describe some of the unique things about their college will give you a chance to see what matters to them and what you can expect on campus. Knowing the most popular majors, special events, and campus traditions will give you a good window through which to view this specific school and make sure it’s a good fit for you.

“What do students do when they aren’t in class?”

Find out about the weekends. Are many students involved in Greek Life? Sports? It’s also important to know if the majority of students live on campus and if they stay on campus over the weekend. Again, these are things that can help to determine if this school is a good match for your interests and ideas about what your college years will be. College admissions officers can be the first people to help you determine if a college is the right fit.

If you are already in the work force, you may consider talking to your employer about any assistance they may offer you if you choose to further your education. Many people never consider that their job may offer tuition assistance programs if you go to school for a job related field.

If you work in the food service industry, your employer may pay part of your tuition if you went to culinary school or perhaps even if you went to school to study supervisory development or accounting. An employee that shows an interest in staying with the company for the long term is often worth spending some money on furthering their education.

If your job does not offer direct tuition assistance, another thing to consider is whether they offer scholarships. The company may offer various scholarships that employees can qualify for based on performance on the job as well as in school. Like any scholarship you will likely have to write an essay and get a recommendation from a higher up in the company, co-worker or someone at your school or community. The great thing about scholarships is that they are stackable, so make sure and apply for any you may qualify for, you will reap the benefits in the long run by paying less for your education and racking up less in student debts.

Outside of financial assistance, your workplace may offer other types of support during your education. You may be able to adjust your work schedule around your school schedule, enabling you to take classes and finish your education more quickly than if your employer did not help you out in this manner. Most workplaces realize that a well-educated employee is likely to be a better employee and are happy to do whatever they can to help you in your quest to reach your goals.

If you are considering attending a four year university you are likely very concerned with the application process. Unlike technical schools, community colleges or online schools, most four year universities have fairly strict admission requirements. If you are an adult who has been out of school for some time you may be worried about getting into the school of your choice.

This is certainly something you should be concerned with, however it is often not as difficult for an adult to get into a school as it is for those who are straight out of high school. Most schools want to have a certain amount of non-traditional students in their classes so they have special admission requirements for these students which may make it easier to be accepted as a first year student.

First, you will want to contact your school of choice to find out if you need to do anything out of the ordinary. Sometimes non-traditional students may have a different application form and additional paperwork requirements from those who enroll traditionally. You will likely need a transcript of all schools attended and any scores from tests you have taken such as SATs ACT or COMPASS tests.

If your tests are out of date you may have to go to the campus and one of those tests or other required tests for your school or major. Depending on your score you may not qualify to attend school as a regular student, but you don’t need to worry too much. Even if you don’t qualify as a traditional student you may be able to attend by first taking some remedial level classes through the college or at a local technical school. These classes will prepare you for what you will face once you are working towards getting your degree.

If you want to participate in a 2011 Iron Man competition, then now is the time to start training. The Iron Man is a triathlon, so it consists of three grueling events: a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. The amount of training that you need for this event is unbelievable.

The 2011 U.S. events will be held on these dates:

May 7, St. George, Utah
May 21, The Woodlands, Texas
June 26, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
July 24, Lake Placid, New York
August 28, Louisville, Kentucky
September 11, Madison, Wisconsin
November 5, Panama City Beach, Florida
November 20, Tempe, Arizona

These dates might seem far off (especially the November ones), but they approach quickly. If you don’t get started now then chances are that you won’t be prepared to finish the event.

In addition to lots of physical endurance, you will also need the right equipment. Don’t think that you’re equipped to complete the Iron Man in swimwear made by Baby Phat. You’re going to need to forget about fashion and focus on function. Be sure to purchase high quality running shoes. The average pair of running shoes will give you between 400 and 500 miles before you need to replace them. Spending a little more upfront, though, can mean that you save money in long run since you won’t have to purchase them as frequently.

You’re swimwear should offer only the most basic protection. You’re not trying to show off your looks. You’re showing off your athleticism. Choose options that allow you to move freely. Most people find that they spend the most money on lightweight road bikes. You can easily spend a couple thousand dollars on the best models. Purchase the best one that you can afford and keep it in top shape.

Many people who consider going back to school never pursue it because they worry about how much it will cost. Information is not easily accessible about the cost of going to different types of schools. It is possible to get a quality education without spending a dime, or you could rack up a 5 figure student debt each year going to a school that won’t meet your educational needs.

The initial price will vary depending on what type of school you attend. A state sponsored community college or technical college will cost significantly less than a private institution or a four-year university. Online colleges are generally privately owned and will cost more than attending a local technical school as well. But rather than going with the cheapest option, you need to make sure the school is going to enable you to achieve the goals you have set for yourself. Just because the technical school up the street is the cheapest, if they don’t offer degrees that interest you it is not worth the money you do invest or your time you spend on your classes.

After you have chosen a school you need to find out if you qualify for any grants from the school or government. Grants are money that is offered to help you in your education and they don’t need to be paid back. They are similar to a scholarship but are not generally merit based, but are instead based on your financial means or the program that you have chosen to study.

For those who have no other options a student loan can mean the difference between being able to go to school or not. They usually offer lower interest rates and better terms than other types of loans so they may be a good choice for helping you to begin your higher education.

For many students the issue is picking a college is a difficult decision. The college information out there would tend to illustrate that there are many good places for students to take their next level of education to. However, making the right choice and being able to navigate through all the information is hard to do.

One of the popular choices these days is to go to a tech school to achieve the next level of education. Schools like these have seen a rise in attendance over the last few years, and for good reason too. Here are a few of the reasons why it makes sense for students to attend a tech or trade school as opposed to the traditional university.

The easiest reason to choose a trade school is that it is a direct path to a job after college. Many students in the traditional university spend four years taking classes to achieve a degree that will promise them no guarantee of anything beyond college. Going to a trade school or for a degree program will ensure that when school is over the student has a career for them.

These students who attend a trade school are given the gift of learning a discernible skill. This gives them an advantage in the job market. While they may not be competing for jobs with those who may have received a degree in English or Communications, but it gives them a clearly defined skill that they can market themselves in the open market.

Trade schools are becoming a staple and a serious choice for the child leaving high school. As they are looking for solid career options to fuel them as they move forward they will be looking more and more for trade schools. The question is what do the traditional universities have to compete with them?

Since I have moved around a lot, I have many friends and colleagues that I try to stay in contact with as much as possible. At times this is hard but with the Internet it is much easier than it has ever been. One of the best ways to keep in touch is this blog. This is how I can tell people what I am doing on a daily basis and people can check in when they want to.

While I love my blog there are many people who don’t want everyone to have access to their information. You might want to share things that are more personal only with some of your friends and family. If this is so, then you can always create a specific mailing list for those people on your email server. Then you can tailor each message to a specific group but not necessarily have to write an email to every single person. This is especially good if you just wish to update people on what is going on and want to make everyone that is special in your life feel included.

Another way to stay connected through the Internet if you love sports is to play various games online. There are great fantasy football leagues and baseball leagues available. In fact, there are online leagues of all kinds that you can make private and include only the people you wish to participate. This will make the games more interactive and you can all see who wins at the end of the season.

There are many ways to stay connected to your loved ones even if you are far away. It doesn’t matter how you do it but the important thing is that you try and that you succeed in incorporating the people you love into your life, even if they are physically far away.

In this day and age, where high school graduates realize the importance of possessing a college degree, the college information highway is more congested than the freeway at rush hour. The mail begins pouring in at the beginning of junior year in high school, with colleges trying to show how they are the best fit for you, how they will help you achieve your ultimate goal, the career of your dreams. During your junior year you will be inundated with letters from colleges promising you the education of your life, along with a description of college life that would make any 17 year old drool.

Being away from home for the first time can be an amazing experience. The emotions run from nervous and excited, to frightened and hopeful, all at the same time. But where to experience these things? What is the best choice for you? How do you find the right fit for you? Making the decision on where to go is one of the most important decisions you will make in your entire life, and one that should not be left to chance.

At iticollege.org you can find solid answers. This is a college information website that can help you make an informed decision about your future. The site includes information on the benefits of tech schools, universities and specialty schools. Here you can find the requirements for enrollment, tuition costs, programs available and exactly what you need to do in the admission process, so as not to be put to the bottom of the pile.

Doing what needs to be done the right way, in a timely manner is of the utmost importance when a college is wading through thousands of applications at one time. At iticollege.org you will be able to make sure that your application is the one done properly, thus making it that much easier for the college to pursue you as their best potential candidate.

Picture this: sunshine is streaming in through a big south facing window. The polished hardwood floors of your arts and crafts bungalow are smooth underfoot, and when you look out of that window you see your perfectly landscaped back garden. There’s a tiny pond filled with gold and white fish, water lilies grazing the surface; trumpet vines climb atop a pergola, and underneath it is a bench where you can go out and work using the wi-fi when the weather is nice.

Inside, you can look around and see a perfect room for calm, quiet work. The desk is made of beautiful dark wood, and the drawers of the desk hold all the office supplies you could ask for. Maybe a few fresh flowers sit in a tiny, sculptural vase on one corner of it. The walls are a pale, relaxing blue–or perhaps a soft mossy green. Accent shelves are mounted in a geometric pattern on the west wall, holding up your entire collection of reference books. An antique trunk by the door, in deep walnut tones that echo the desk, holds your heavier textbooks. And, in case your house (by some chance) isn’t as perfectly tranquil as you might prefer for it to be, have no fear; a set of noise-canceling headphones sits inside the desk, and the door is sturdy, solid wood that you can always close behind you.

This is the perfect place to get your degree, if you’re getting that degree through earnmydegree.com. Definitely it beats the dorm room “collapsible chic” look. In fact, attending your college courses from home has never been so attractive, and dorms have never been so easy to leave behind. The best thing about this student office is that to get to it, you don’t even have to leave your home.

Many high school students struggle to choose between attending a community college and a four-year college. Both options can provide students will a quality education and the means to continue on to further their higher education and find jobs in a variety of career fields.

Affordability is one big factor that drives students to consider a community college. Community colleges tend to be much less expensive than four year colleges and universities. Students can get the majority of their core curriculum credits done at the community college and spend that time deciding exactly what career they would like to pursue. If they decide that two years of education is enough for that career path, they can graduate with an Associates Degree. If they would like to complete their Bachelors Degree, their community college credits can transfer over to a four-year college.

For students who are not sure about attending college, a community college can be a great place to find their way. Students who struggled in high school classes can catch up and have the time to make decisions about the future.

Community colleges can also be a great choice for students who need to be able to work during college. Classes are often offered in the evenings and at times to work with busy adults schedules. Flexible class schedules and administrators that understand the challenges of working while going to school can make community colleges a great place for these students.

Non-traditional students often feel very welcome at a community college where the majority of students are typically commuting from home and not living in dorms. It is easy for older adults or people with jobs and families to feel left out at a four-year college where students are all living on campus, a community college is a place where learning can happen and then students can return to their lives outside of school.

You’ve completed the long college admissions process, found the right school, and planned your class schedule for the first year. Now you’ve arrived on campus and it’s time to focus on getting situated in your new home.

Seek out Mentors
Get to know your residence hall advisers during your first week. These are the people who will help you to find your way around campus, make sure you don’t miss important events, and answer questions when you need help. Building a good relationship with them early on is an essential step in finding your way in college.

Also take the time to meet with your assigned academic adviser and your professors. Ask questions and take the time to be sure they know your name and know how they can help you navigate your first semester. Learn their office hours and show up at convenient times when they will best be able to work with you.

Find the Information
Do bulletins go out in emails or to an online board? Where do you find the schedule of upcoming events? Get familiarized with the information flow on campus and you’ll be less likely to miss out on opportunities and places to meet people. If there will be a clubs and activities fair, be sure to attend and sign up for things that interest you. Clubs are one way outside of the classroom that you will be able to get involved and identify new interests.

Use the Buddy System

Link up with your roommate, someone in your hall, or someone in class and start broadening your horizons from there. Sometimes the most challenging part of finding your way in a new place is making that first friend. From there, you will be more likely to go to events where you will meet more people and build yourself a support system in your new college home.

Your college application essay is a very important part of the application materials and one of the places where you can tell the college the exceptional things about yourself. Taking the time to write an excellent essay isn’t easy, but the benefits are far worth the extra effort to get it right.

Be Unique
Write about something you truly care about, a significant experience in your life or an achievement that made you proud. Then use the essay to relate it to who you are as a person. In addition to learning about the experience, the reader should walk away with a good snapshot of what makes you unique as an individual. These are the essays that will stand out in the minds of readers and help you to get accepted at your top choice school. Highlight your skills and strengths, the college application essay is not a time to be modest.

Make it Interesting
Be sure you are writing an essay that you would like to read. College admissions offices read thousands of essays each year, make yours one they enjoy reading and they will be less likely to rush through it and on to the next application.

Check it Again
Write your essay and read back over it. Good grammar and spelling are essential to the college essay and it should be flawless by the time you turn it in. Then put it away for a couple days and read it again with a fresh set of eyes. Make changes and then it’s time for someone else to take a look. Ask your high school guidance counselor or a parent to read your essay and write down their thoughts. In addition to corrections, ask them to summarize what they learned about you from the essay and whether they think the essay is a good fit for who you are as a person and as a student.

Wanting to go to a 4 year university is one thing, getting in is a whole other story. The truth is that getting into a university is not easy. There are a lot of things you have to be prepared for because the better the college the more you will have to do to be prepared to get in. Making the right moves for the 4 years you are in college will impact you significantly down the road. Here are some tips to getting into the 4 year university and what you need to do.

The first thing a college looks at is the GPA(grade point average) of the student. While it’s important to do well on the standardized tests, it’s far more important that a student show consistency in their work day in and day out. Without it there is something lacking in the application and will get passed over by a student with a much more consistent in class grade point average.

The next thing is a good college prospect must be is able to do well on the standard test. Sometimes the little extras that go on an application make it hard for the university to determine if that makes you better than any other candidate. So in order to get through the list of applicants down to the right list of applicants they have to take a look at the standard test scores. This means that doing well on the ACT and the SAT will speak well for their attractiveness to a university. It would make sense to even take prep courses to ensure the very best score possible.

Getting in to college means doing things right from the start. Making a mistake on the bigger picture items means less of a chance getting into a persons university of choice.

Choosing what type of educational path you take after high school can be intimidating. There are literally hundreds of choices out there in the world. There is the possibility of going to a college, traveling abroad, studying in a foreign country, taking classes at a community college or taking classes online at schools like onlineeducation.com. With so many possibilities out there it can be hard to gather all the information out there for a high school student.

Here is a quick look at what online colleges provide and some of the benefits of attending an online school for your college classes:

Flexibility

Online colleges offer flexible class schedules which allows you to have free time during the day or even carry a part or full time job to get a bit of income after school. Flexibility is often cited as the number one reason for choosing online colleges.

Cost

Since there isn’t the massive amount of overhead with online schools the cost is significantly lower than that of a brick and mortar college campus. There is no need for electricity, water, building maintenance, student unions and other expenses that many colleges charge a student for. Instead, a student will be able to pay for the classes that they take and get it for a reduced amount of money. There is also an amount saved because students do not need to travel to school, purchase food on the campus or even stay on campus for room and board. This allows students to save a lot of money also.

Fast Track Degrees

Many online colleges offer the chance to get a degree in a shorter amount of time than that of a brick and mortar college. This fast track allows students to be able to get a degree and get started in their chosen career path quicker than those who attend a regular college.

For many high school students, choosing a major feels like a daunting task. Luckily, it is completely normal for college students to enter their first year of college without a selected major, and sometimes, without even an idea of what their major will be by the time they finish their first year.

When you look at schools, take the time to ask how many students are undecided in their first or second year. Find out what the deadline is to declare a major and at what point the college will encourage students to make a decision in order to graduate on time. These dates and numbers vary between colleges and some schools will be much more open to students taking their time to choose a major. During the application process, you can also take a look at the course catalog to see what interests you and what requirements are needed for different majors.

When you don’t have a major going in to college, it is important to use that time wisely to take care of requirements. The benefit of this is that when you do choose a major, you will be able to focus entirely on courses in that subject and not worry about running out of time on your requirements. Taking a variety of required courses will also allow undecided college students to try classes in several different departments. This is one way that many students stumble on something that interests them and decide to pursue a degree in that major.

Take time during your first year of college to learn about different majors, meet with professors, and meet with a career center if one exists on your college campus. These are all ways to consider options and learn about potential career paths. Chances are, as you explore different paths, the right on will become clear and you will be on your way to declaring a major.

When beginning your search for a college, it can be overwhelming to choose from the hundreds of schools that exist in the United States. It is impossible to look at every school individually, so you must create some guidelines for what you are looking for in a college.

First, you need to narrow down your choices of a major. This will be the best way for you to gauge if a school is good for you. If you have no idea what you want to major in, focus on what kind of university you want to attend and what environment you are looking for.

Thinking about what you want in a university is also a good second step for students who have narrowed down their major. Things to consider about a school would be the size of the school and if it is privately funded or state funded. Besides size, you should think about what part of the country you want to live in.

These considerations should help narrow down your choices. From there, you should further narrow down the schools to four or five choices by comparing the programs in your major. This is where campus visits are very important, as they help you experience the atmosphere on campus and can show you how you would fit in on campus. If you do not feel comfortable on campus or are not excited about the opportunities the school offers, it may not be the college for you.

If you find a school that you absolutely love, do not be scared away by the cost of the school. By working with the school, you may be able to get more scholarship money or may be able to find more outside scholarships. Further, taking classes during the summer with elearners.com can help you graduate sooner and at a fraction of the cost.

Congratulations! You have worked hard for many years, studying, writing papers, doing homework, and now it is time to jump into the big pond – college. If you have never searched for college information, it can be a daunting and exhausting process. Who has the right information? Where do I find the “tricks” to choosing the right place for me? How do I narrow down the mega information superhighway of the Internet? The answer is simple, just go to iticollege.org. This is a college information website, and a great place to start.

If you google search “applying for college” more than 23 million responses will come up. Well that narrows it down for you, doesn’t it? However, iticollege.org has done the work for you. The site can show you benefits for technical schools, four year universities as well as specialty schools. If you have a school in mind, you can easily find out what the application requirements are, what programs are available, costs and the admission process itself.

While the visiting and open houses that are offered by the colleges are informative and interesting, this is not the first step in the process. At that point you will want to be informed and ready to ask all the important questions, in order to distinguish one particular school for another, and ultimately the right choice for your education, the “perfect fit.” With a little research, you will have that edge.

Searching for that place that is just right for you can be a frustrating process, but it is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life, choosing the education that will form your future. That is why iticollege.org is there, to help you filter through the fluff, and get down to finding that one place that will not only prepare for a future in the big world, but put you in charge of your destiny.

The TV, Internet and radio are constantly being flooded with ads for various online colleges, such as earnmydegree.com and the University of Phoenix. All of these online colleges proclaim that they have flexible class schedules, allow you to take classes in your PJ’s and even allow you to get your degree at an advanced rate. However, online college isn’t for everyone.

Online college is a lot different than attending a regular college. While it offers a bit more flexibility than a brick and mortar college it also comes with a lot of different responsibilities that a brick and mortar college does not have.

The major difference between brick and mortar college campuses and online college campuses is the level of responsibility needed by the student who is attending classes. Online colleges allow students to be a bit more independent and not have as much structure. Due to this level of independence, a student must have a will to learn and a desire to stick to a structure. With online colleges no one is there to inquire about why you haven’t completed an assignment or follow up and make sure you are keeping pace on a project. All of these responsibilities fall on a student who is attending the online college classes.

Many students enter online college classes believing that they are going to be a lot easier, stress free and almost like taking candy from a baby, however, online college courses require the same amount of studying, discipline and work that regular college courses require.

There is a certain type of student that can make online college courses work. Before you consider signing up for the wonderful world of online college it is best to ask yourself if you believe that you have the ability to be disciplined enough to make sure that you study regularly and keep pace with the course work..

Getting into a college isn’t always as easy as you think. Just like a gmat prep course can help you get into business school, you should be doing your own preparation for college. There are a few things to note before going into the admission process that can save you considerable time and energy and improve your chances of getting into the college you want.

The first thing is the admission essay. Filling out an application is easy. It’s simply a collection of information. On the other hand, writing an application essay is a rather tricky thing. The beginning should let the college know what you are interested in and why you are applying. Don’t go into detail, because it is unnecessary at that point. The next thing to do is open up to the question they ask. Most essays have questions like “why do you think you’d be a good candidate….” Make sure you answer this question as in a manner that is as straight forward as possible. Give them the real run down on what makes you a good choice for the program. Once you do that, you can start to tell them a little bit more about yourself. Personality matters more than anything in this section of the essay.

If you are lucky enough to get your application approved, there may be an interview process. This won’t be easy and it’s often nerve wracking to talk about yourself in front of another person, but think of it more as your time to shine. When you are asked questions, don’t look for the perfect answer. Instead, look for the honest answer. Make sure you are being yourself with them. They interview many different applicants and they are certain to know the difference between someone who is trying to hard and someone who is sincerely likeable.
