The Online College Application Process

Applying to an online college can seem like a very daunting task. When you start looking at the process it seems like there are endless steps. However, most schools make every effort they can to make the task as quick and painless as possible, while still gathering all of the required information. For this example I will walk through the steps of applying at an online technical school. The steps may vary slightly depending on where you apply, however it should give you a good idea of what to expect with the application process.

First, you will need to apply for financial aid. The website of FAFSA on the web (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will guide you step by step at doing this. You will just need some basic information about you, your household’s income, and last year’s tax records. If you wind up with any questions or problems you can contact your chosen school’s financial aid department and they will likely be able to help you with finding the answer.

After you do this you will have around a week’s wait to get approval for financial aid. Depending on what you are awarded you may need to provide your own additional funding or get a loan, something your financial aid office will assist you with. Then you will simply fill out the school’s application form and take it, your transcripts of high school grades or previous college work, and an application fee to your school’s registration office.

You may be approved that day, or if it is a school with higher requirements you may find out another day. Once you are approved to attend the school, you can start registering for classes. Decide which program you want to enter. For example, if you want to study photography, your counselor will suggest the right online photography degree program for you. You will then choose your classes for the first semester. Then, you are all set for your first year of college, and another step toward a successful career!

Benefits and Drawbacks of a Specialized School

One option that many people don’t immediately consider when deciding where to go for college or higher education, is a specialty school. There are schools devoted to learning many different skills or trades that may be good choices for many people. There are benefits as well as drawbacks to these types of schools, many of which will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

The main benefit to a specialty school is that the training and classes will be tailored to what you need in the workforce. Many of these programs award certificates or diplomas instead of degrees which do not require as many of the core classes that would be required when getting a degree. If you are just wanting to advance in your career you may not need to take advanced math classes, chemistry, history or literature. Another related benefit is that you can normally obtain a certificate or diploma in much less time than it would take you to go to a full university. This is an excellent option for those with already established careers who are hoping to advance, as they will not have to take time away from their careers to attend school and may even be able to do much of their class work online at home.

However, there are certain drawbacks to specialized schools. A diploma or certificate may not have the same positive impact on your resume as a traditional degree would. Also, most specialized schools are not publicly funded, which makes them more expensive to attend and often times harder to get scholarships and grants. The best specialized schools will have financial aid counselors who can help you work through the paperwork and perhaps apply for what grants or loans are available. The drawbacks are often worth it in the end when you finally achieve your educational goals.

One of the programs commonly available at technical schools and community colleges is the business administration program. This is typically offered in either a diploma or associates degree program. Someone who is looking to find employment as an office manager or assistant would find a degree in business administration very useful. Many technical and online schools will allow you to earn your degree while still working a full time job.

The difference between a degree and diploma is generally based around how many additional core courses are offered along with the required area-specific courses. Someone seeking a diploma may only have to take classes that deal with information they may need in the workforce, while someone who obtains a degree will likely have to take classes in general English, college level algebra, and the social sciences.

The types of area-specific classes that will be encountered while someone is earning a degree or diploma in business administration are quite varied. Over the past few years with the job market being very tight and with little growth, those who have higher education consistently report an easier time finding employment and higher satisfaction with their jobs.

After receiving a degree in business administration, some students may find that they wish to work on more specific job skills. A degree in business administration is a great jumping off point for education in the realms of accounting, finance, business management, and computer science.

The Technical School Experience for Adults

Many adults would like to go back to college but feel very overwhelmed by the college experience. They imagine that college is like it is shown in the movies, a giant campus with thousands of students all around 20 years old. This may be true in some cases, but there are many other options that may be more comfortable for the adult learner.

One of these options is a technical school. No matter where you live in the country, there is likely a technical school within fifty miles from your home. And now through internet technology, many classes are available online too.

A technical school will generally offer associates degrees, diplomas, and certificates. One misconception many people have about technical schools is that they are only for learning about computers or other technological fields. This is far from the truth. Many schools offer classes in computers, business, medicine, drafting, art, childcare, hair care and a host of other fields. These technical schools often have students of all ages and backgrounds. There will be students fresh out of high school, working adults, and senior citizens who are expanding their knowledge after retirement. Four-Year Universities – Who Are They For?

With all of the options currently available to potential students, why would anyone want to go to a traditional four year university? That is a valid question, and one with many answers. For many people, a complete well-rounded college experience can only be obtained at a four year college.

There are many fields of study that simply require someone to get a full four-year bachelors degree from a traditional school. Online education has grown in leaps and bounds, but they will never replace traditional colleges for fields such as medicine, science and other lab related fields. No book or computer program can compare with the hands on experience a student can get while attending university.

Technical schools and community colleges have filled a need for educational programs that only require a couple of years of schooling, but they cannot handle the wide range of classes that someone who is seeking a bachelors degree needs. Additionally, many students wish to go further than their bachelors degree and a traditional university is more likely to have connections to help them reach their goals.

Another important benefit that four-year colleges offer is the overall college experience. These schools have on campus housing, sports teams, clubs and a Greek system that can offer students long lasting friendships and future business connections. A student who wishes to pursue college or professional sports will likely need to attend a four year university to gain the notice of sports scouts or agents.

Students who choose to live on campus can also become more immersed in their studies and (depending on their own study habits) may have fewer distractions than students who try to attend a school part time and work while living away from the school. For young students especially, going to college at a four-year university will give them the chance to move from being a child who relies on their parents for everything to being a self-sufficient adult.

Admission Requirements for Technical and Community Colleges

For most technical schools and community colleges there are very few requirements for enrollment. Some basic requirements are: a transcript of schools previously attended, financial aid documents (if needed) or pre-payment of classes, proof of citizenship and residence, and required testing.

A sealed transcript will generally be required, to insure that it has not been tampered with in any way. This can usually be gotten for a small fee from the last school you attended. If it is another college it will include any college credits received or attempted as well as any testing done. If the student has only a high school education it will show grade point average, SAT scores and other pertinent information. Finally, if the student has a GED it will include the final testing scores when the student took the GED tests.

Financial aid documents will vary from school to school and depending on the financial aid requested. Typically asked for will be tax records from the previous year, information about household income and information about other financial aid the student may have received in the past. If the student chooses to pay for classes themselves it will generally be required prior to classes beginning.

Proof of citizenship and residence may or may not be required depending on the school attended. Many schools serve students from around the world, but they will simply need information about their citizenship for record keeping purposes. Proof of residence can be required if the school only serves students in a certain geographical area, which is not common.

The final thing many schools require is testing records. Most schools require some form of pre-admission testing, be it SAT’s, ACT’s or Compass testing. These tests are often offered at the colleges themselves for those who have not tested elsewhere in the past.

Education for those interested in Health Care

Many people are interested in a career in the medical field, but do not know how to get into this rapidly growing career area. Some people think that to get a job in medicine that you have to go to school for years and then spend another couple of years as an intern before you will have a chance to enter the workforce. Yes, this is what is required to become a doctor, but there are tons of different jobs available that may only need a two year associate’s degree or even a technical certification that can be obtained in a short eight week class.

There are several different types of nursing programs available. An RN degree usually takes four years to obtain, an LPN (licensed practical nurse) requires a two year degree, but a person can achieve a CNA (certified nursing assistant) certification in just a few months. There are many rewarding career options for people who earn any of these degrees or certifications. Another similar position is that of a medical assistant which can usually be earned in two years or less, often with mostly online classes.

There are many other options in the medical field that are not nursing related. There are careers such as a lab assistant, phlebotomist, radiology assistant, medical transcriptionist, medical office billing specialist and many others that interested individuals can earn certifications in at local technical schools or through online coursework. These fields are diverse and many of these areas will only grow in the future as more and more of the baby boomers reach the age where they start requiring more and more health care. A student who is knowledgeable in technology as well as the medical field should have no trouble obtaining and keeping a job in the medical field over the next few years.

Choosing Between Traditional and Online Schools

One decision many people have when deciding to go back to school is whether they should attend a traditional school or an online school. While this is a very personal decision there are three things that potential students have to consider when going through this process. They are: quality of education, what environment is most conducive to their learning, and what type of school will fit into their lifestyle best.

Many online schools offer teachers and educational programs that are comparable to those of traditional colleges. The degrees obtained are just as good as one received at a college that requires attendance in the classroom. However, there are many schools that are simply diploma mills, so make sure and do extensive research before signing up for one of these colleges to make sure you are not wasting your time and money on an education that will not help you to obtain employment once you are finished. Another consideration is whether the program you are interested in translates well to online education. Classes that require hands on learning may not be the right choice for an online education.

Some people have trouble sitting still for a full length class and an online education would be a great choice for them. Others however may not have the self-motivation that taking classes online requires. Often, classes never meet face to face and you may have to pace yourself to get work done when it is required and seek outside help if you have trouble understanding.

Finally, anyone thinking about going back to school needs to determine what type of education will fit in with their lifestyle best. Someone who has young children may prefer to go to a traditional school part time so they can have a quieter learning environment. Those who are in the workforce may need online classes to fit school in around their jobs.

Learning about a Community College with School Visits

Once you have decided what type of school you plan to attend you now need to decide exactly what school you want to enroll in. If you have chosen to go to a technical school or community college that is based in your local area you have the benefit of being able to learn more about these schools in a very personal manner. Pretty much every school will be very excited for you to come down and learn more about their campus and educational programs. You can learn about what programs are offered by looking online, but there are several different things you need to look for and observe if you are making a school visit.

First, while you are at the school, take a look around any student or community areas and see if there are any extracurricular activities listed. A school with an active student body will be more likely to offer programs, clubs and activities that will appeal to you. Joining a club or other student group will help you to feel like an important part of the school and will help you make lifelong friends and business connections.

Next, take time to talk to students who are relaxing in the student center or cafe. Find out if they are happy with the quality of education they are receiving. You can learn so much more from someone who is already there and experiencing the school than you can from a flyer or web page.

Finally, see if you can spend time talking with a teacher in the subject you are interested in. You may be able to figure out if the school has the same focus on your chosen subject area that you are looking for. A great school gets that way because of the quality of educators that work for it.

Financial Aid Options for Prospective College Students

College education can be one of the most financially challenging things anyone will undergo. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Anyone who is considering going to college or a specialty school needs to look at all of the financial options available before they commit to something that can potentially change their financial future.

First, everyone who is thinking about going to school should first fill out the FAFSA on the internet. This is a form that will take about forty five minutes to fill out and can be done with just some simple information about your household income and last year’s tax records. This is the first step to getting financial aid. This automatically qualifies you for the Federal Pell Grant if this is something that you are financially qualified to receive. It will also be what your school needs to determine if you qualify for any additional state financial aid.

Next, take your information from the FAFSA to your chosen school’s financial aid office and talk with the counselor on duty about what options are available for you. There may be grants or scholarships you have not considered. There are scholarship programs targeted at nearly every type of potential student out there.

Once you have exhausted all these possibilities you should have a much better idea of what further funding you will need. This is where you will need to decide if you want to get a school loan to cover the balance or if you would be more comfortable paying the costs out of pocket. This can be a good option if you have savings or a job that can cover expenses. Taking out a school loan can seem scary, but is one of the most secure lines of credit available and they often have low interest rates or deferred payments.
